Cinema that Must Move Away from the Visible
A Workshop Around Alejandra Riera

The Museo Reina Sofía organises a workshop around French-Argentinian artist Alejandra Riera alongside artists Caroline Déodat, Andreas-Maria Fohr and Antonio Menchen, setting out from notions which form the backbone of her and the participating artists’ work: communal art-making, the fragility of materials and themes and film as an open process.
The activity gets under way with a collective tour, between artists and participants, around the exhibition < Garden of Mixtures: Attempts to Make Place, 1995 -… > (2016), before moving on to the Sabatini Auditorium with a talk around and screening of < … - ohpéra - muet - … > (2016), a film-documentary that interrogates the restoration of the Columbus statue in Buenos Aires and evokes the role of painter Gustave Courbet in the Partis Commune and made by Riera with the Brazilian theatre company UEINZZ, comprising different psychiatric patients, therapists, philosophers, actresses and other occasional participants.
The lecture will be followed by one of the works in the show, 2x tent, an itinerant public cinema without walls that will be taken down and reconstructed in the Sabatini Building Garden by all participants. The tour culminates in screenings held in this outdoor mobile structure and presentations by Caroline Deódat and Andreas-Maria Fohr on cinema as a form of experience.
Participants
Caroline Déodat is an artist and researcher. By way of film and installation, her work focuses on archive processes and alienation, as well as on media threading together historiographies and recomposing genealogies that have been silenced, in an attempt to create an alternative ethnography of academic cartographies. She is a research associate at the Centre Georg Simmel (EHESS/CNRS). Andreas-Maria Fohr is a visual artist, researcher and experimental film lecturer at the École Nationale Superieure d'Art de Bourges. Through different formats and methods, his works investigate the underlying construction of systemic values and the relationships between craft, work and symbolic structures. Antonio Menchen is an artist. His work explores installation film, the film device and the materiality of celluloid as twentieth-century archaeology. He has exhibited work in spaces such as Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo (CA2M, Madrid, 2018), mumok (Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien, Vienna, 2015) and The Showroom gallery (London, 2013). Moreover, he programmed, with Raúl Liarte, the film series Uno casualmente se acerca, siente algo y se queda (CA2M) in 2016 and directed the voice and performance programme El imitador de voces (Teatro Pradillo) in 2016. Alejandra Riera is an artist. Her work, situated between writing, action and the film document, seeks to foster collective thought and the artistic gestures or situations of people or groups on the margins of society. She is a lecturer at École Nationale Superieure d'Art de Bourges and her work has been exhibited at documenta 11 and 12 in Kassel.
