Copylove is a research project begun in 2012 by Rubén Martínez, Txelu Balboa and Sofía Coca that attempts to analyse and represent the relationships and tensions that arise between the commons and love within communities, between emotions and community links. An excuse, in short, for examining the factors that produce desirable conditions of existence: emotions, processes of interdependence, mutual assistance, love of community and care giving. The term copylove seeks to express everything that we produce and reproduce, and that can bring us closer to a sustainable lifestyle, and further from the notion of profitability as a principle.
After various residencies, which were conceived as a space in which to delve further into and share a series of reflections, but even more as an opportunity for the participants to work together, this two-day conference at Museo Reina Sofía is a means by which to share the current state of the research, and to work with different people and independent collectives in Madrid. This public presentation of the project and the workshop being held represent a return to the concept of invisible commons, which has been a constant in previous research and events, serving as a "label" for what has been learned thus far in Copylove.
Invisible commons are understood to be non-monetary resources, ways of doing things that (for better or for worse) have been borrowed from the area of independent cultural production, processes taught or acquired in community practices that make communities sustainable. They are invisible resources because they have been interiorised as a “natural” part of collaborative practices, but they have also been invisibilized by today's dominant development-focused system, which often ignores processes and attitudes that do not have economic exchange as their goal.
With this hypothesis as the starting point, the working tables are organised around three themes that allow for an exploration of the elements comprising this other daily life of emotions and collective intelligences:
• Communities of individuals, strange communities, Godzilla communities. Individualities as opposed to singularities in communities.
• Memory: Emancipating ourselves from path dependence. From hacking memory to becoming free of path dependence.
• A life worth living, a life in common. The ambivalence of putting life in the centre. What type of life is the result?
