The exhibition Eco: arte contemporáneo mexicano shows the art scene in Mexico over the last fifteen years. Far from being the result of a representative selection of current Mexican art, the exhibition aims to expose the artistic discourse design that is present in Mexico beyond the exoticism shown so often by American and European centralism. The collection explores the echoes and subtle relationships established between the pieces that are sometimes critical, but always fascinating.
The focus of attention is centred on the group of artists from the generation of the nineties, who cause the rupture with the artistic environment that had traditionally been the image of Mexican art. Along with them, pieces by former artists are also exhibited, not only chosen because they constitute specific references, but because they open a range of discursive reverberations. Many of the selected pieces have in common the fact they work with different layers of meaning to time and in parallel show a special taste for the common, popular and every-day; aspects that confer on them a poetic status as well as a strange and attractive beauty. The pieces make up a broad spectrum of interests and their diversity does not prevent interaction between them.
The Eighties and Nineties influenced these artists with a return to the theme of the body: without a doubt a natural turn to the context of the politics of inequality that marked this period. However, Mexican discourse is more obsessive and personal, more rooted and unpredictable and less theoretical. Other eco systems that are present in the exhibition are the broad extension of abstract possibilities, which sometimes arise from the concerns of the artist regarding political and social issues or of their emotional identification with the landscape as well as the ambiguous game with the body or a meta-visual reflection on the nature of photography. As a result, in Eco: arte contemporáneo mexicano, the spectator finds their own ecosystem in each of the pieces by forty Mexican artists represented in various formats, from painting and video to photography, sculpture and installation.
