Mujeres creando are a group of Bolivian women who act from the premise of individual creative feminine attitude. Formed in 1992, their starting point is a strong opposition to injustice and male chauvinism dominant in their society, and use a direct and comprehensive discourse, the most effective sort for their environment. Disobedience to colonialism and globalisation is the basis of their ideology, declaring "faced with occidental Latin American feminism, we have decided to create our own thinking and reflection about who we are as women, what we want and what we are building".
The project carried out in Espacio Uno, Ten cuidado con el presente que construyes, debe parecerse al futuro que sueñas, projects some videos of their actions. Under the title: Creando mujeres, they were produced for a programme for the La Paz television channel PAT, and broadcast between May and August 2000. They monographically present current affairs issues in Bolivia: the dictatorship, justice, racism, work, NGO aid, the construction of women’s identity, sexual differences and utopia. The opening discourse of this group of women focus on these eight themes, they opt for creation without the production of objects that can be exchanged and, above all, dispense with any concept or work that can be hung, exhibited or displayed in any collection.
Three members of Mujeres Creando: María Galindo, Julieta Paredes and Florentina Alegre, are present in one of the exhibition rooms in Espacio Uno during the first twenty days of the project exhibition, willing to talk to anybody who wishes to do so. The walls of the rooms seem to be covered with some of the paintings which, designed by them, endure in the streets of Bolivian cities. In them, they use spray-cans as a weapon-brush, as in Jamás corazón de piedra; Así como tú me quieres, yo no quiero ser de ti.
Their demands are focused on the creative act and the individual right to exist and in freedom of expression as a basic concept. Action, the use of the word and the scream as the essence of their discourse and body language make up their main means of action.
Mujeres Creando does not attach itself to any conventional art circuit. Far from any intention, purpose or political collaboration, they reinvent a new trend of critical and artistic thinking in which their works are their actions and the social outcomes that they can generate, "Fed up with other people theorising about our lives and bodies" as affirmed by Mujeres Creando.
