La Sociedad Estatal de Conmemoraciones Culturales (SECC) (The State Society for Cultural Commemorations) in collaboration with the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, honours Spanish fashion through a major exhibition dedicated to one of its references, Manuel Pertegaz (Olba, 1918). The exhibition coincides with the sixty-second anniversary of the first Pertegaz Couture House, Barcelona (1942). The exhibition includes seventy-five suits presenting creations by the designer especially from the Fifties to the mid-seventies, when Pertegaz and Cristóbal Balenciaga are the benchmark for fashion in Spain.
This exhibition-tribute takes place about forty years after Pertegaz’s big catwalk in the Spanish Pavilion at the New York World Fair. Colours, fabrics and shapes are shown by the master who is able to reach the international level of the great masters of haute couture from Spain. His discipline, perseverance and dedication to fashion for over seventy years make Pertegaz an ambassador of tradition and universality of Spanish fashion.
The designer Elio Berhanyer, curator of the exhibition, and Pertegaz himself have selected the suits from the more than six hundred at his haute couture workshop. Many have been collected for the occasion and have been lent by clients of the great couturier. In the exhibition the suits will be displayed following the order of a catwalk: sport, morning, cocktail, evening and bridal; the colour ranges and styles being considered more important than chronological order.
The models are placed in front of photographs that evoke the era in which they were created. The images are taken by the photographer Francesc Català-Roca, to whom the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía dedicated a solo exhibition last year.
Also exhibited is a series of photographs that cover the life story of the designer, accompanied by documentation, sketches, labels, telegrams and press clippings. The exhibition concludes with many accessories designed by Pertegaz for his creations, in his constant search for beauty.
