Salvador Cidrás (Vigo, 1968) is an artist who belongs to the generation that takes over the Atlantic group, formed by Antón Lamazares, Menchu Lamas and Antón Patiño amongst others. While the revival of these is produced mainly through painting, the new Galician artists use a variety of available media, as in the case of Cidrás, who incorporates photography and video art.
In 1994 the artist participates in the exhibition 30 años no 2000, selected by curator Miguel Fernández-Cid, who is also the curator for this exhibition in Espacio Uno. His involvement in this exhibition is followed by solo exhibitions such as Progresions at the Casa de las Artes in Vigo and Departamentos Mr. Magoo at the Gallery Marisa Marimón in Orense, while his interest is focused on the analysis of architecture or design as ways of reflecting on the everyday human being.
This theme is completely present in this exhibition which displays his recent works under the title Proxectos, proyectos, projects 2000-2001, and which takes place at the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea (CGAC) and the Espacio Uno of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
The videos Bloody Nose y El prisionero blanco -both four minutes long and made in 2000- are visions of the landscape and architecture carried out in collaboration with artist Vincent Blanco. The first is set in a residential area under construction in Southern California. The intermediate nature of a show home, in between inhabited and uninhabited, serves as a basis for an uncritical urbanistic piece, concerned with showing a scenario where multiple readings come together. On the other hand, El prisionero blanco takes place in a mountain hotel in communist Czechoslovakia. The two videos are presented accompanied by a series of photographs, which result in an approach to architecture as a representation of new models.
In another project, called TLOT (The Land of Tomorrow), Cidrás recreates the exterior and interior of a house and its inhabitants in a photographic series which is accompanied by a large neon sign with the initials TLOT and a four-minute long video. The crisis of family structures and a certain apocalyptic tone accompany this work presented at the CGAC.
Lastly, in Espacio Uno, the project entitled Nueve tipos de encuesta is exhibited, which makes up a set of nine works with suggestive titles: Al fin y al cabo, uno nunca sabe con quién trata; El truco de dormirse; Puede que nos hayamos hecho amigos, y puede que no; Bastantes muchachos de la base; Shock nervioso; Un episodio antiguo de matrimonio con hijos; El treintañero disimulón; El proyecto (I) and El proyecto (II).
