The Documents 27 programme, on the relationships between art and publishing, spotlighted the work of draughtsman and cartoonist Chris Ware (Omaha, 1967), one of the standout figures in independent comics. This interview sees Ware, at once a witty inventor and methodical artisan of books, speak of his connection to the origins of the comic book, put forward powerful narrative overhauls and show us, in a celebration of reading, narration and the page, how the comic and drawn stories are, even at the apex of the digital age, one of the most fascinating artistic practices today.
