Exhibition. Marc Pataut. First Attempts
Marc Pataut, Le Cornillon - Grand Stade (Saint-Denis), 1994-1997. Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
The photography of Marc Pataut (Paris, 1952) is structured around the formulation of research projects which address those political and human issues which often stand outside art institutions’ parameters. Through his photographs, the artist sets forth a link between different collective and individual practices, bringing to light the co-existence of different realities, shining a spotlight on the most disadvantaged groups as he explores the ways of opening up photographic expression and the category of the artist upon sharing the camera in some of his series. The exhibition brings into focus the period stretching from 1981 to 2001, punctuating the 1990s, the time in which the artist documented the emergence of new social movements in France, those in close proximity to the labour demands which would result in a new concept of the political subject. Dates: From April 25 to August 27, 2018 Location: Sabatini Building, Floor 3 Organized by: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Curated by: Jorge Ribalta
Lecture. Marc Pataut in conversation with Jorge Ribalta In conjunction with the opening of Marc Pataut. First Attempts, the galleries of the exhibition will play host to a conversation between the artist and Jorge Ribalta, the show’s curator, on photography as an instrument for capturing life at its most vulnerable and precarious, and as a public service and a form of institutional critique. Other issues addressed will include the ethics of representation of the disadvantaged subject and, ultimately, the reasons why photography remains pivotal as an artistic practice of the real. International Dance Day. Study for Tambourine and An Experience of Transmission: BACH
María Muñoz performing Bach © Jordi Bover
The Museo Reina Sofía brings International Dance Day forward to Saturday 28 April with a double programme showcasing the work of choreographers Sofía Asencio (Societat Doctor Alonso) and María Muñoz (Mal Pelo), accompanied by Tirso Orive and Federica Porello, respectively. Both proposals, despite differing in points of departure and focal points, come together over a specific concern with the relationship between the languages of dance and music. Both are presented as "situations of investigation" around the body; Study for Tambourine draws from popular tradition and the idea of travelling dance, An Experience of Transmission: BACH explores the possibility that the transfer of a performance does not necessarily mean copying and repeating.
