À Rebours

The Informalist Rebellion (1939 – 1968)

This catalogue, employing as an introductory motto the expression À rebours (Against Nature), with its literary connotations, presents a landscape of international Informalism considered as diverse proposals which enable “informalisms” to be spoken about for the first time. In taking the start of the study back to 1939, there is also a break away from the historiographical axiom that situated Informalism as a shift born out of the post-war period, and in the shadow of US Abstract Expressionism. The volume contains aspects related to the critical reception, patronage and public response, in combination with case studies like Japan and Spain.
