Tacita Dean

The Friar's Doodle

The screening, inside the vaulted Monasterio de Silos, of a 16mm film that surveys the drawing given to Tacita Dean by a friar years previously, a source of reflection for the English artist on artistic spontaneity and popular forms of communication through incisions on walls. In her text, Lynne Cooke situates this project within Dean’s practice; Miguel Sobrino writes about the history and roles of graffiti in medieval architecture; and Elisabeth Lebovici delves deeper into the question of artworks that stem from a reflection of other works, exploring Dean’s installation further. It also includes a “Notebook of Egypt” with hitherto unpublished photographs by the artist.
